Why Kingston, Jamaica Should Be Your Next Holiday Destination

Hey all,

I’ve been back in the UK for just over a week and I am wanderlusting HARD!

From the title of this blog, you’ve probably guessed where I’ve just come back from.

Yes… I’ve been living carefree, soaking up all the vitamin D the caribbean has to offer, sipping on Red Stripe Lemon, and exploring the bustling capital city of Jamaica, Kingston.

The Caribbean is somewhere that I’ve always gravitated towards when looking for my next holiday destination. It’s hot, it’s instagrammable, and there’s so much culture to explore.

Having travelled to Barbados on multiple occasions, I thought it was about time I explored my Jamaican heritage. And seeing as both mine and my boyfriends families are from Kingston, it was only right that this would be our home for 2 weeks.

My heart fell for Kingston instantly. The vibrancy of the city set against the mountain views were absolutely superb, so, if you’re planning a trip to the caribbean or more specifically Jamaica, it’s only right I put Kingston on your radar.

1. The Food

Jamaicans know how to throw down… anywhere! Whether you’re strolling through Kingston passing local food businesses with home made wood ovens, or sat down in a nice restaurant you’re always seconds aways from tasty, fresh food. There’s something for everyone. If you’re after something traditional like ackee & saltfish, lobster and bammi, callaloo and breadfruit or even something more western, like a burger, Kingston has got an array of eateries. Plus, Vegan options are standard!

2. The People

Locals you’ll find in Kingston

No Problem is Jamaica’s national slogan, and it’s perfectly fitting. The people are loud, confident, outgoing, funny, charismatic and will help you out with no problem. Oh, and somehow, everyone seems to be able to sing.

3. The Culture

SONY DSC

With Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley and Usain Bolt national heroes, there is plenty to be explored when it comes to the history and culture of Jamaica.

A Jamaican folktale I came across was that the first Jamaican Bobsledding team actually got the idea to compete as bobsledders in the Olympics after racing around on carts used to transport food in downtown Kingston fresh food market. True or not, it’s quite interesting.

4. The Music (…and the parties!)

As I said before, everyone on the island seems to have a record label worthy voice. Is it any wonder, Jamaica was home to the musical legend that was Bob Marley. The island thrives off of good music and good vibes. From the parties, to concerts, it’s evident that Jamaicans have music flowing through their veins.

At one point during our stay we were at a street party that started at about 5pm and ended at 7am the next morning. Music blasted all night with No Problem. can you imagine the ruckus from neighbours if that happened in the UK?!

5. The Views

Compared to Barbados, Jamaica is a very mountainous island, so much so, that anywhere  you find yourself in Kingston, there’ll be a beautiful backdrop of a mountains and palm trees to admire. I mean do you need anything else?

I have so many unforgettable memories from Jamaica that there are so many more beautiful reasons on why you should visit Kingston. Keep your eyes peeled on my next post all about the places you should visit (beaches included)!

Have you/ would you ever visit Kingston?

5 Podcasts you NEED to listen to

Hey guys,

I’m back in full force, and let me tell you…there’s reason for it!

Living with very limited internet connection for nearly 3 weeks has made me really… really value internet connection. I mean lets be fair… it practically rules our every second.

But, when it’s suddenly taken from your fingertips is it any wonder why we… or matter of factly speaking I was left not knowing what the hell to do with my time. It’s actually crazy how much my life is consumed by online shopping, blogging, social media and everything else that comes with owning a smartphone.

While my phone was practically out of service, I had to become creative with how I managed my ever depleting data (there’s just never enough is there?!) so instead of downloading movies on Netflix I decided to discover, subscribe and download different podcasts. (Just click on that little purple icon, you wont regret it)

Podcasts literally saved my sanity. I had no idea that podcasts were a thing (again) until Christine put me on to one, on our trip to Paris and it’s now become a personal fave.

Keep reading and let me fill you in on podcasts you NEED to listen to just because… or if you ever find yourself in your bedroom that doesn’t have a TV and no friends to call (Yes it was hell and some tears were shed but I’m seriously living for the moment when I can laugh at this 😫😂)

Life Update & How I De-Stress

Hiya,

It’s been a while, but I’ve got exciting news to share – I’ve got a new job! 🎉💷

It’s been a long time coming and I’m super excited to start the next chapter in my career, but since finding out, and telling my current employer that I’m leaving the company, plus sorting out my whole big hand-over, it has been nothing short of stressful.

It’s weird how such exciting news can quickly turn into a daunting process 😑 😒

Thoughts like; How the hell am I going to tell my manager? Am I meant to look upset or be more apologetic that I’m moving on to different and better pastures? Should I give up a great opportunity? – kept popping into my head, and I found myself quickly stressed with not a clue of what to do. There really should be a handbook for dummies on the subject.

I’ll be starting my new adventure towards the end of the month, but before I can really enjoy and bask in my excitement I’ve got a mammoth job of creating a ton of content before I leave, and to be totally honest it’s all just too much to deal with.

So, if you’re like me and are transitioning into new waters, here’s my tips on how to deal with stress at work…

Plenty of breaks. This point has been said a bazillion times, but it’s totally true, and while I’ve got even more work to do, I’ve found myself stepping away from my desk a little bit more, to take a stroll, make a coffee, and just talk to people. As I stare at computer screen for most of the day, it helps me to take a break from the harsh computer light and take my mind off of my ever growing work load.

Drink lots of Water. Water refreshes and hydrates and to be totally honest with you a nice cold glass of water is calming. It keeps me alert and when I’m rushed off my feet. It’s crazy what a simple glass of water can do.

Make Music Work. When I arrive at work the first thing I do is put on 1xtra in my browser and plug in my head phones. It helps me disconnect, focus and helps me relax as I’m listening to music I love. Plus, it means I’m not distracted by stupid office politics and it means people don’t disturb you unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Side note: Do you have any albums you’re loving atm? Solange’s new album ‘A Seat At The Table’ and Wretch 32 ‘Growing Over Life’ have been on replay!

A Lovely Bubble Bath. I try and not to take any work home with me – mentally & physically. I also really try not to dwell on things that have really bothered me throughout the day, so once I’ve got home, I like to take some time to myself, grab a cup of tea, chill in a warm bubbly bath using with a Lush bath bomb and turn on an episode of Narcos – the perfect relaxing evening!

Enjoy Exercise. I’m sure many of my loyal readers know that I go to the gym, but throughout the month of September I took on a massive challenge of running 26.2 miles for The British Heart Foundation, which meant running at least 2 miles every night. Although it was tough, I’ve tried to continue running a couple times a week as it gives me something to look forward to and actually helps me to de-stress, which I guess is due to my body releasing endorphins. After each session I  actually feel happy and proud of my accomplishments which is a plus!

Reading & Instagram Scrolling. This is a weird de-stressing mechanism I use, but escaping to another place through a book or looking at amazing imagery really helps me chill out and relax. I guess being a serial Instagram scroller has its perks 😂

Do you have any tips on how to handle stress levels? Have you ever had to deal with an awkward resignation? Let me know…

My Top 10 Tunes!

SONY DSC

With the release of such good tunes recently, it’s only fitting that I let you in on my top 10 favourite tunes right now. I just love, love, love a tune with good base, so these wireless noise cancelling Bose headphones are doing it for me right now. I’m a massive fan of Hip Hop and RnB, so whether I’m driving about, chilling at home or trying to focus at work, better believe I’m listening to these tunes!

SONY DSC

  1. Rihanna -Work
It would be a crime not to have this as my top 10! For about 2 weeks now this song has been on replay in my car, it’s a good hype tune and wakes me up preparing me for a long day at work. The music video was released too and I’m just getting pure Bajan vibes, you can be sure to catch me doing a little whine in my seat too! Don’t you just love the chemistry between Drake and Rihanna?
  2. Drake – Summer Sixteen
If you have not heard this tune, where have you been, under a rock? I’m on and off with Drake, but this song is great for getting pumped and if you wan a just get gassed.
  3. Kanye West  – Real Friends
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Kanye’s latest album but I’m feeling a few songs off of TLOP (The Life of Pablo)  I mean, who doesn’t love to love Kanye – or love to hate him! On a real though, this song had me in my thoughts and feelings – who are you real friends? Are you a real friend?

SONY DSC

4. Kanye West – Ultralight Beam
This song is just beautiful, powerful. Kirk Franklin, Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price & The Dream all on one track. This is a God dream!

5. Beyonce -Formation
I mean do I really have to explain why I love this song *Flicks locs*

6. The Game – Do It To You
Would you let The Game do it you? After listening to this song you might! I’m in love with The Game, I went to his concert a few weeks ago in Camden and it was ‘different’ to say the least. I hadn’t heard of this song until after though, and if you’ve seen his #FineNi**aFriday posts on Instagram you know what to expect!

7. KANO – GarageSkank
I’m new to Grime, but Kano is a legend, and from the song you can genuinely tell he had fun recording this track. It shows off his talent and cheeky side.

8. PARTYNEXTDOOR -Break From Toronto
This is one of those songs that you wish was longer. I have to listen to this about 3 times on repeat to get my fix lol

SONY DSC

9. D’Angelo – Betray My Heart
Forgot about D’Angelo? He didn’t win a Grammy this year for nothing

10. Chris Brown – Back To Sleep
The beat, the lyrics, damn Chris, come and set me back to sleep!

What tunes are you loving right now?  Leave me a comment, I always enjoy finding new music x

What’s In My Bag

FINAL

I’m so nosey, I just love reading and watching What’s in my Bag posts, so thought I’d do one myself!

After about a year’s worth of deliberation, trying to decide what bag I wanted to buy next, my siblings had, had enough of my indecisiveness and made the decision for me, they were kind enough to buy me a Michael Kors Camille Satchel for Christmas!

I’m so finicky with the types of bags that I buy. When I do finally buy one, I use it the time, so I guess it’s worth me taking my time right?

As you can see from the pic, I have A LOT in my bag, and actually have to clean it out daily, because I hoard so much.

But enough of that, let’s take a snoop around this bad boy! The first item in my bag is my Makeup Pouch. I carry this with me all the time. To be completely honest with you, I never really touch up my makeup throughout the day but, it’s always nice to carry -just in case, especially if I’m off out after work or staying at my boyfriends. If you want to see it’s contents check out my February Face post 😉

Next, I’ve got some nail stuff. I hate when my nails chip throughout the day and for some reason, it always happens. So instead of looking at my crusty nails at work and getting annoyed throughout the day, I decided to start carrying around Nails Inc’s Express Nail Varnish Remover as it’s easy and there’s no mess or gaffing with cotton pads and nail varnish removerand a nail varnish colour. I’ve actually become the go-to girl in my office if anyone needs a nail touch up lol. I’m currently loving; Tuberose by OFAT & It’s Genius by Essie.

NAIL STUFF

Along with my mini manicure set, I HAVE to have some hand cream. This is not even an option for me, I go through about 2-3 hand creams a month – I cant stand ashy hands on myself or others – a bit of cream never hurt anyone! This one is from Lush, the cream sinks into you hands and makes the supple – but I won’t go into that too much as I’ve got a Lush haul coming soon 😉

PERF

I have to carry around a scent or spritz, and at the moment I’m obsessed with Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid,  Oh ma gahd, this scent is divine, it’s definitely seductive, it’s fresh, feminine and floral, I love it. And let me just say, it’s sooooo much better than black orchid – I don’t know why everyone lied about loving that scent, it was awful.

I live in the UK, so its a necessity to have an umbrella. This one has lasted me years though, it’s by Windbreaker so it doesn’t turn inside out, when the wind decided to attack, plus it’s got a little torch on the bottom which is a cute addition.

Always have to carry paracetamol.

PARA

I’ve got a thing about dry skin, I can’t stand it. I apply Carmex about 2000 times a day. so this is always in my bag, along with a few other lip products.

BOOKS

One of my New Year’s resolutions were to get organised, so I bought a diary which I carry everywhere now. On the topic of books, I’ve been reading the Kray Twins biography and it is so good, heard good reviews about the films, but need to finish the book first – you know what they say, the books always better!

Bose headphones are my life! Literally the best headphones ever. I love listening to music, and I like my base, so these are ideal. On the topic of music, what are your favourite playlists on Spotify? I’ve got Make Out Jams, R&B Jams 100, Grime Shutdown and Hip Hop Top Tracks on replay all the time when I’m driving.

Everything else in my bag are just my necessities, house & car keys, purse and gum.

I hope you enjoyed having a snoop, what are you carrying around daily?

Really Kanye?

Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 17.11.58

Over 11 hours ago Mr. West took to Twitter in a bid to get Mark Zuckerberg’s attention to fund him with 1 Billion dollars! – yes, one billion dollars, in order to help fund his creative juices in which will ‘make the world a better place’.

When it comes to Kanye, you either love him or love to hate him, and personally I haven’t really decided what group I’m in. When I first read his series of tweets I couldn’t help but laugh. He’s definitely got some nerve.

If you haven’t seen his tweets or heard about his latest tirade on social media, Kanye claims to be in 53 million dollars of personal debt and is calling for Zuckerberg’s help to change the world.

Kanye has decided that he IS Mark’s favourite rapper and that it his duty to help him ‘breathe’.

Now, my first issue is that with all Kanye’s influence and money it feels that he’s blaming everyone else for the result of his debt. His creativity seems to be to big for the world.

He tweets ‘one of the coolest things you could do is help me in my time of need’ really?! #firstworldproblems ayy.

In my opinion if you are a certain calibre like Kanye and live a certain life, what can you not achieve?

I feel Kanye needs to re-evaluate what he spends his money on in order to achieve his goals, like the rest of us.

He even goes on to give Zuckerberg a time frame in which he would like a phone call – I mean, c’mon Kanye!

Although I was flabberghasted, I do love how spunky Kanye is. I live by the rule: If you don’t ask, you don’t get, and obvious Kanye has no qualms with asking his peers for help.

Claiming to have retaken the throne of rap, on thing he is, is passionate… ‘Bars are worth more than money because it’s something the people can use everyday to feel inspired.’ I love Hip Hop and even I have to agree with this.

What are your thoughts on Kanye’s Twitter rant?
