My Beauty Travel Essentials

Hey Lovelies,

With summer teasing us here in the UK, I’ve booked my next holiday to Dubai!

As a semi-seasoned jet setter (lol I wish!) I’ve teamed up with my blogger babe – Lani Rae all the way from New Zealand to bring you a fashion and beauty series to help you prepare for your summer travels – so make sure you head over to her blog for the fashion segment!

As I have just come back from Thailand, I thought I’d let you in on my top holiday beauty essentials, as I’m sure all you girlies can appreciate how hard it is to decide what beauty faves we should pop in our suitcase, while taking into account that we may get a tan – I mean, do we really need a brand new powder from duty free 3 shades darker? Yes, I hold my hands up, I am guilty of this – never again!

I love the countdown to a holiday for two reasons; it’s a chance for me to escape to an idyllic location, away from the hustle and bustle of London and the stresses of work so I can relax, but, also because I know it’s a great chance to treat my skin to plenty of Vitamin D as well as calm down on the makeup so my skin can breathe and repair itself.

It’s good to note that while on the plane, it’s wise to take off any makeup. Air con on the plane is a MF and completely dries out the skin. So pack makeup wipes and a great moisturiser – I quite like Nuit Polaire, although a night cream, it’s very moisturising without being heavy, and really sinks into the skin – great for a long haul flight.

For the most part of any holiday I go on, I rarely wear much makeup, however, I do have a few beauty essentials I need to let you all in on, so keep reading!

Beauty Essentials 6

Now I always over pack, no matter where I am going – is this just me?

An absolute essential for me is sun protection. Many people think that black people don’t need sun protection but everyone should protect themselves against UV rays, which is why I love Ultrasun.

Ultrasun have a massive range of sun protection – which I get for the face as well as the body. The formulas are not too heavy either, which is great as no one wants to feel like a grease ball in the sun.

Beauty Essentials 4

Next up is a CC Cream. Before I went to Thailand I was on a mission to achieve golden shimmery sun kissed skin. It didn’t really work out as planned but on my hunt, I did manage to bag The Body Shop’s new Instaglow CC cream.

I’m surprised at how much I actually loved using this as I’ve never believed in CC creams. However, I found it worked well to give me a more even skin tone, while looking quite natural, perfect for when you plan on lounging around the pool, but don’t want to go completely commando on the face.

Beauty Essentials 3

In the evening, I mixed the the CC cream with a dot of my usual foundation for fuller coverage, and set with my Bare Minerals powder.

When on holiday a highlight needed to accentuate your sun kissed glow! And it’s easily achieved with the perfect products and the right brush.

I hadn’t found the perfect highlight, before going to Thailand so I used a bunch of products to give me a nice shimmery glow anyway, which became my go to beauty finish.

Just look at that highlight! I used a combination of Lush’s Feeling Younger Golden Highlight on my cheekbones, followed by Bobbi Browns golden shimmery eyeshadows.

My next beauty essential has to be a brow pencil. I was talking to one of my blogger compadres, Shannon Kara, and we both agreed that while foundation isn’t a must on holiday, having well-groomed fleeky eyebrows and a nice lip colour is an absolute must. While I was using my MAC eyebrow pencil, during my next getaway I will definitely be packing my magical Benefit brow productshave you read my review?

Beauty Essentials 2
I normally tidy up my eyebrows with my foundation, instead of concealer as it makes for less packing and I hate the halo effect round eyebrows.

As I previously said, I like to keep my makeup to minimum and being away in a hot country is the perfect opportunity to show you skin some TLC, so cleansing and moisturising products are much needed essentials. I always pack a charcoal face scrub by Garnier, as the fine exfoliants really get every inch of dirt off my face. I then moisturise my face with a light moisturiser – Drops of Youth from The Body Shop so my skin has a clean base for any products to go on if I choose to put on any makeup.

Beauty Essentails 5

When on holiday there’s no doubt you’ll probably go out on the town at least once, which is why a nice lippie and an eye shadow palette suitable for every occasion should be part of your beauty essentials. Keep things simple as no one has time to sweat off their whole face  – it’s really not a good look, but make it effective. I love packing my Ruby Woo as it screams sophistication and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a red lip?

So there you have it – my holiday essentials. Simple yet effective. What are you beauty essentials? Leave a comment and let me know x

Don’t forget to check my girl – Lani Rae’s collab post all about fashion essentials too!

Brow Game Strong with Benefit

This is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how…my brow game is now strong with Benefit *dab*

bene event
Precisely My Brow Pencil used on my brows for Not On The High Street Christmas in July event

So, last week I went to the Bloggers Hangout event and in the midst of doing my makeup my MAC eyebrow pencil ran out. FFS! Such convenient timing ey!

Has this ever happened to you before? I was literally in a state of panic, how could I go to an event with one eyebrow?! The search began for anything else that could possibly fill in my right brow.

After rummage around my makeup stash, I was sweating my already done makeup off, but I  found an alternative – my brow zing palette from Benefit. Hallelujah! I used to use this brow palette years ago, when bold brows started to become a thing, but kinda just discovered other things. I remembered I really liked it as it was so easy to use and I liked that it had both a wax and a powder.

Each brow looked slightly different, but I finished off, sealed my right brow with some hope and concealer and left for the event.

While I was out I knew that I needed another pencil, but of course there wasn’t a MAC store in sight, so I settled on Superdrug where I found a really good eyebrow pencil by L’oreal. I would have never thought to try such a product but I was actually surprised at how good the quality was, plus had a wax pencil on the other end and it was only £5 so I couldn’t go wrong. Or so I thought (btw. I am getting to the Benefit products lol)

I used the pencil about three times, before I had to sharpen it (why isn’t every eyebrow pencil self-sharpening?) When I started sharpening it, I didn’t stop, the pencil kept breaking. I literally had nothing left. Luckily the same day, ASOS (good ole asos) sent me a 20% discount code, and long story short I treated myself to a few Benefit products.

I don’t actually know why I stopped using the Brow Zing eyebrow palette, but this new Benefit eyebrow range has got me hooked again. They just do the most with their packaging and after reading plenty of reviews I decided to take the plunge.

I was a bit dubious with ordering an eyebrow pencil online as I didn’t know what colour to get- there are currently six shades to choose from, but after going back and forth for about an hour I chose- Dark 5 – which was a the perfect shade for me – Not too dark and not too ashy.

ben2

I ended up buying 3 cool brow products: Precisely My Brow Pencil, Goof Proof Brow Pencil and Ready Set Brow.

Once they arrived I so excited to open them up. Isn’t the packaging EVERYTHING? I love that they make creating the perfect brow a magical experience through the packaging alone.

Once taken out of the cardboard packaging I was left even more thrilled. The products just looked so pretty and sassy with its sleek silver finish – It left me wanting to do my eyebrows lol.

So far I’ve been really impressed with the quality of each product, although, I’ve never been disappointed with Benefit. My favourite product has to be Precisely My Brow Pencil, which was actually described as a pen on ASOS. I thought I’d prefer the Goof Proof Pencil but this one has a much smaller tip, that lets you create a precise brow shape. I’m so heavy handed so it suits me well as I initially used the Goof Proof, but when I too a step back from the mirror my brows looked way too bold.

ben7

After playing around with the two pencils, I would definitely say that the Precisely My Brow Pencil is my new go-to simply because I cant get too carried away with it, plus I think if you’re like me and still get your brows done, it will accentuate the shape more naturally.

benefit brows
Using Precisely My Brow Pencil

However, I would say the Goof Proof Brow Pencil is really nice to use as it has a angled tip, perfect for adding a sharp arch or a fluid curve to the brow. This pencil would be great for me if I’m going out and want to make a strong statement with a cool eye makeup look.

ben6

I also feel that the quality of the pencils are so much better for my skin than MAC’s eyebrow pencil. As I’ve got oily skin I feel MAC’s eyebrow pencils creamy consistency makes my eyebrows look shiny. However, although Benefits pencils have a nice consistency which allows them to glide over your brows easily, and when set with the Ready Set Brow gel it lasts all day, without smudging of sliding (even in hot weather)

I’ve never thought to use a brow gel, but after using the Ready Set Brow, I’ve seen the light. The gel is easily and neatly applied using a comb and once applied doesn’t go hard when it dries, which has always been a thought that’s turned me off.

Each pencil was around £18 on ASOS, which is quite steep, especially as MAC’s pencils can be bought for £15, but they can be bought at a cheaper price at QVC. Saying this I feel you get more for your money, as the pencil seems to be longer and you get a spooky at the end of them too – how thoughtful!

If you’re looking for a brow alternative, or wan a give the new Benefit brow range a go, I would highly recommend. Think of it as an investment in your brows lol.

Have you tried this range? What are your thoughts?

Tartelette 2 In Bloom Eyeshadow Palette Review

Recently I’ve taken a back seat with new beauty products on the scene, I am seriously lost with what products I should be buying and what products I need to leave on the shelf, but one product I treated myself to a few weeks go is the Tartelette 2 In Bloom palette and it is one that I am seriously impressed with.

T4

Let me start by saying – My name is Rianne, and I am a beauty hoarder. Honestly, I have about 3 drawers filled to the brim with beauty products that I have never used, but have bought because they look pretty in the packaging (I really ought to go through them and see what gems I can find).

I thought it was time to treat myself to some new eye shadows as I had been using my MAC Burgundy x9 eyeshadow palette to death – to be honest it’s one of the best palettes I’ve ever bought, but it was time to find something else, that was just as good, after all there’s only so many colour combos you can come up with 9 shadows.

I am a sucker for bronze/neutral shades, so when I heard about the Tarte palette I was sold. This luxurious palette comes with 12 beautiful shades, but let me start with the packaging – every girl’s kryptonite.

Tarte got it so right with the packaging of this palette. As you can see it’s super ‘girly’ covered in a floral print which is fitting as it is called ‘In Bloom’. The palette comes in a shiny cardboard packaging, and once opened it reveals the smooth, hard gold casing the same floral print on top. Absolutely beautiful!

T5

Open it up and you are greeted with a huge mirror. I feel that all eye shadow palettes should come with a mirror – it should just be part and parcel, because when you’re on the go it makes things so much easier – plus it really adds to its luxuriousness.

Directly underneath the mirror is the jackpot. 12 NEW and undeniably beautiful hues, 9 matte shades, perfect for creating a day to day look, great for work, plus 3 shimmery lustrous shadows that can effortlessly turn any look into a more glamorous one, perfect for a night time soiree.

T7
Colours from right to left: Firecracker, Rocker, Leader, Rebel

My most used and favourite colours are the ones swatched, how beautiful are they?

The shadows in this Tarte palette are so dense and a little goes a long way, the colours are so pigmented and blend so well, especially when applied with Tartes double-ended eyeshadow brush (I swear by this brush), which disperses the product easily, evenly and with minimum effort for a sleek look that lasts longer and allows you to precisely place product for a symmetrical look.

Each shadow is made with Amazonian clay – ‘a nutrient rich clay is extracted from the banks of the Amazon River where the nutrients are at their highest concentration. As nature’s most perfect ingredient, this multitasking and total skin balancing clay has been known to remove surface oil and mattify skin, nourish all skin types and give skin an overall smooth and even appearance.  Can we just take a moment to appreciate the pigments of these eyeshadows.’

T6

I am seriously in love with this palette and impressed with how much I use it. The colours are insanely dense and pigmented and I love that these colours can also be used with MAC’s x9 palette. I bought this from QVC (which shouldn’t be slept on if you’re looking for American branded beauty at affordable prices) for £35 which is a little pricey, but you definitely get your moneys worth.

Have you tried this palette, what are you first impressions?

Follow me on Snapchat(RiRi9316), I would love to get to know you x

Spring: My Favourite Lippies

Hey honeybuns, this month has been a really bad month in terms of how much money I’ve spent and how much beauty I’ve accumulated, but the sadder thing is, is that most of the things I’ve bought haven’t even been delivered yet – sad times 😦

As it’s finally spring, and the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping (earlier and earlier -_-) and the days are becoming longer -yipee! I thought let you in on all the lippies I’ve been rocking this month… well, just because!

I’m a simple kinda gal, so I always stick to similar colours that suit my skin tone and that I feel confident wearing. As I’ve had a couple of days off work, I’ve been getting out and dressing up a little more than usual, so take a look at what I’ve been using on my lips, maybe you’ll try these out for yourself…

lips102

So first up – it obviously has to be a lip balm – a staple product in my makeup bag and if you read my Beauty Blogger Tag, I’m sure you know what it is. Last week I visited Lush and  I was actually in need of a new lip balm as my old faithful – Carmex -had run out. I chose Honey Trap as it’s quite thick and instantly moisturising, and it smells like honey – can it get any better? The only downside is that it’s £6 for a small tub, but if you’re obsessed with lip balms like I am, take the plunge it’s a beaut!

lips103

Next up is my NYX Strawberry Parfait Butter Gloss. This is a very recent buy for me, but I’m loving this gloss. I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of NYX products but this gloss is perfect for me, it gives a great pink finish that’s not too offensive and ideal for wearing to work. The applicator is a great size too as well as the consistency – if like me and you get annoyed with really sticky formulas that are horrible to apply, this is a pleasant buy.

lips104

I’m a diva at heart, so when I saw this beautiful MAC lip liner and looked at the name I knew it was meant to be lol. Ms Diva is a beautiful wine colour that looks great as a lip liner to add a deeper tone to a pink gloss or just great you want to use all over your lip. It has great lasting power too.

lips105

I love, love, love this lippie, it’s one of my all time favourite and it’s a great colour for all year round. I bought this Urban Decay lipstick in Shame last year while in Barcelona and the packaging is so lush. I think its great for making an instant and easy statement, especially if the rest of your makeup is quite natural. The consistency of this lipstick is really creamy and not at all drying, which is what keeps me coming back!

lips107

I’m always on the hunt for a good nude, but its so hard to find a great shade that compliments me #blackgirlproblems. On one of my last trips to Mac I found this lipstick which took forever to find – there’s just so much choice! Polished Up is a beautiful brownish pink shade that gives my lips a nice flush of colour. I often grab this one on work days or when I don’t want anything too noticeable on my lips. Again it’s really creamy, lending itself to natural makeup looks.

lips108

Last but not least is an unexpected find – Barry M’s Cor Balmy in Rose Lea! It smells like marshmallows and gives me an iridescent pink hue on my lip, which I love for spring. This is my go-to lippie for every day, it’s so effortless and complements any makeup look I do.

So what lip products are you loving for spring? Let me know hunnies! x

MINI Lush Haul

Like many other beauty bloggers I’m a huge fan of Lush. I don’t often take baths – I’m more of a shower kind of girl, but when I do a gorgeous bath bomb is what I like to reach for, and Lush caters for just that, however, during my recent trip I picked up some goodies!

A few days ago, I headed into my local shopping centre for a little treat, I just felt that I needed some TLC and some ME time.

After a bit of aimless roaming, I passed Lush and the sweet scents caught me, I had to turn back.

I ended up spending a good hour and a half in store, with the loveliest Customer Assistant. It was her last day in store, but she made it so memorable for me. She spent so much time answering my questions, demonstrating new products on my skin, she was brilliant – I just love when I have a lovely in store experience, it really does make me wana SPEND!

When I entered, I knew I was in need of some hand cream. This time of year really tends to cause havoc for my skin,  not juts my face, but my hands and I hate having dry hands – its the absolute worst. I go through about 2 hand creams a month which is quite ridiculous, so I thought I’d see what lush had to offer. I began trying different creams and instantly knew I needed Helping Hand. This cream quickly sinks in and caters to hands that are always in sinks – even though my hands aren’t always in water, they feel like they are, so I felt like it was an obvious choice for me.

Packed with almond oil, cocoa butter and camomile, this cream really tackles the dry crusty areas, you know the bits in between the fingers and aims to soothe them, really moisturising, without leaving my hands oily or greasy – Instant Buy.

After trying it myself the lady in Lush came over, so I explained my dry hand woes and she took me over to the sink to really demonstrate how it worked.

She handed me this Blue salt scrub aka Rub Rub Rub, which I rubbed all over my hands. As I started to wash off the scrub under the tap, I could instantly feel the difference. My hands felt like butter! My hands have never felt like butter!

rub

Another item added to the basket… sorry, but not really that sorry.

The lady then advised me to dab the excess water off my hand, so my hands retained a good amount of moisture, without too much excess. On one hand she gave me the Helping Hand hand cream, which felt oh soooo good. She left the other hand dry while she went to get another product.

Now, you may think I’m exaggerating, but if I leave my hands a second without creaming them after they’ve been in water my skin gets ashy and uncomfortably tight almost instantly, but after using Rub Rub Rub I genuinely felt moisturised.

When she returned, she came back with a body conditioner – Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner. This is heaven scent -like the play on words? Ha. It smells beautiful. Like roses and honey. She advised to put this on while in the shower and wash off, so it doesn’t leave a greasy residue – perfect when I’m running late to work.

body moist

After bagging 3 items I continued to roam around their cosmetics section, which I never knew they had, did you?

I was drawn to all their facial cleansers, but my purse was crying at this point but the lady was kind enough to give me a sample of Ultra Bland a gentle yet thorough cleanser which she recommended after I raved about Body Shop’s Camomile cleanser – and to be completely honest this works just as well and smells amazing, so i’ll definitely have to purchase next time.

We began just talking about makeup products… as you do, and I told her I use MAC’s strobe cream. After a little search she came back with Feeling Younger – what I feel is a more pigmented highlighter for darker skin tones – read my review.

SONY DSC

After bagging a more than a few new items, I just knew I couldn’t leave without a bath treat, so I picked up their new Flowering Tea – a jasmine scented bath dunk… to subside my tea craving I was having by this point. I haven’t used it yet, but it looked great after a demonstration and it has glitter… how could I say no?

tea bag

This was one of the best Lush experiences I’ve ever had, and really cannot wait to go back.

What Lush products have you been enjoying, or are there any you recommend? I would love to know x

February Face

february face final

I’m a makeup junkie – there I said it! I love makeup, I love buying it, the fancy packaging, building a collection and just admiring it, but out of the gazillion pieces in my makeup collection, here’s what I’ve actually been using on my face this month.

Let’s start with Eyeko Black Magic Mascara – It is hands down the BEST mascara I’ve ever bought in my life, AND it was only £3 at a beauty sample sale – result! I used to use Benefit’s They’re Real! but it’s nothing on Eyeko. This mascara really does work, giving your lashes drama, length and curl, without clumping – I really can’t imagine using another mascara. My lashes tend to get weak too, but this contains Keratin and Shea butter which helps strengthen the lashes and conditions them… what more could you really want from a mascara.

Staying on the subject of eyes and lashes, my next love is Benefit’s They’re real Push Up Liner. I’m going to be honest, this eye liner is not the easiest to use because the design of the tip of the pen that’s designed with a ‘number’ to push lashes out of the way, but once I got the hang of it I found it’s quite easy to use and create a fleeky flick. One thing I love and hate about it though is that it stays put. Once you’ve drawn a line forget about trying to wipe mistakes away, but, on the plus side you don’t have to worry about it rubbing out throughout the day. You can also control how much actually comes out by twisting the bottom on the pen, which is handy.

Bare Minerals Powder in Golden Dark. I rediscovered this after my Mac pressed powder ran out, and I’m so glad I did. I had three lying about, so I’ve got enough to last me a lifetime. This is a non cakey powder that leaves your skin looking golden with a slight shimmer – I love it. It’s way lighter than Mac’s pressed powder and lasts throughout the whole day, I only touch up if I’m going out after work.

The next product that’s been on my face practically everyday since I bought it, is my Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation (yes ladies, now you don’t have to worry if a guy takes you swimming on a first date, lol) This foundation is beautiful, after getting a Mac Makeover, my artist recommended it and I find it looks so much better than the Studio Fix Fluid does on my skin – it looks more smooth and fluid. this foundation is a mid coverage foundation and build able, which is great if you have imperfections you want to cover. A little goes a long way too as this tube has lasted me about 5 months.mac3

Bobbi Brown and Mac products have a always been a staple in my makeup collection. I’ve had this Bobbi Brown palette for about 3 years and it’s something I always use when I’m going out or want to add a little shimmer to my look. I can’t actually remember what this palette is called but I use the colours for highlighting on my brow bone, and cheek bones. This is kind of my alternative to a contour kit, as I have high cheek bones this complements them, much more than a deep contour which I feel will exaggerate the shape of my face.

bobbi brownI think, in fact I know I have a problem with eye shadow palettes as I have so many, but only use this Mac Burgundy x9 palette, it gives me LIFE. The colours are just so beautiful – subtle enough for everyday, but are so pigmented and shimmery that you can wear them on a night out. my fave colours are; Honey Lust, Antiqued, Embark, Star Violet and Sketch.

mac1mac2

One of my more recent purchases is a NYX Butter Gloss in Strawberry Parfait. I hardly ever wear lipstick or lip stain, but I thought I’d try something different and its definitely the colour for me –  a perfect mix between a pink and brown and it smells lush.

nyx

And lastly, it’s not really a makeup product, but I use this everyday, to control enlarged pores, even when i’m not wearing makeup. Maybelline’s Instant Pore Eraser is a miracle in a tube. I feel everyone in the beauty world has tried and tested this product but it’s something I’ll repurchase as it helps my makeup apply better and look a lot smoother over areas where I suffer with enlarged pores.
