Lush vs MAC – Battle of the Highlighters

So, I’m sure we’re all aware of the makeup trends such as strobing, contouring and most recently chroming and to be completely honest, I’m not a fan of them all, however, I do love a bit of strobing. I feel this makeup technique really accentuates my strong facial bone structure (I have high cheek bones) and overall creates a makeup look that glows, sparkles… and slays to the gods!

When I first heard of strobing I had to book myself a MAC makeup lesson to help me achieve a glowing look. The lady that was teaching me recommended MAC’s Strobing Cream – a luminous cream that highlights.  This cream truly does work to give your look a glowing luminous touch. You can use it under your makeup or mix it into your foundation and blend it into places that you want the light to catch – cheekbones, chin, eyebrow bone and down the centre of your nose.

While I don’t use it all the time, when I’m on a girls night out, it works a treat and gives your look that extra pizzaz!

I checked into LUSH to look around their new products (I had no idea they did cosmetics) the other day, and the customer assistant recommended a product called Feeling Younger after asking if I had heard of MAC’s strobing cream. She made me try it on, saying it was another alternative to the cream, and I was instantly impressed, so I took  tester home to try out with my makeup – and let me tell you it’s a strong contender in the highlighting game!

Lush’s Feeling Younger is highly pigmented, has more of a golden shimmer and is less pearlised compared to MAC’s strobing Cream, which has a more of a silver finish to it.

Lush -Feeling Younger (Top) MAC – Strobing Cream (Bottom)
As you can see the two are completely different pigments so, I decided to do a look using the Lush’s Feeling Younger and I was pleasantly surprised.

SONY DSCLush really bought it’s A -game with this highlighter. It blended well with my foundation and was so easy to blend in on top of my foundation, allowing me to really show off and highlight my features. I also love that it has a golden matte shimmer, which I feel suits my dark skin tone a lot more that MAC’s strobe cream which is more of a silvery iridescent glow. What was an absolute plus, was that this product can be built upon, the more I put on the more shimmer was visible, which I don’t feel can be achieved with the Strobing Cream. I dont feel the image gives it justice, but I loved just how shimmery my highlights were.

On this occasion I feel Lush won the highlighting war, which I am completely surprised about as I’ve never tried anything from their cosmetic section, but I’m happy I did!

What do you think about this look? What’s your favourite highlighter and will you be trying Lush’s lush products? Let me know…

Nail Your Style – My Fave Nail Polishes for Spring!

Nail Your Style - My Fave Nail Varnishes

Can you believe there are exactly 24 days until it’s officially Spring – where has the time gone?

Spring has nearly sprung and while the weather has been transitioning, so has our beauty and fashion style. We’re taking on more fresh colours and putting away dark shades – although I do love rocking an Ox Blood shade at any time of the year! So of course this should be applied to the little details we love to take care of, like our nails.

I’m a huge collector of nail varnishes and nail products. No, seriously. After a major clean out of stale, gloopy polishes, I now have about 200 nail varnish bottles in my room right now – so let me take you through a few of my favourite nail hues that I’m loving at the moment, and of which can be perfectly worn with the onset of spring in sight.nails3

First off, is my Mavala Nail Care Set is tha bomb! I usually use these products before my choosing my actual polish shade, as these help to repair and strengthen my nails. After shaping and buffering my nails, I’ll coat them in Mavala’s Scientifique – a nail hardener, then go in with a two step nylon fibre base – which has a rough texture, and seal which acts as another protective layer. I really do recommend these products as they have helped keep my nails in good shape after they became damaged and very brittle – too many trips to the nail salon 😦

nails5

Next, I go in with my fave shade of the moment. This week it’s Essie’s – Jamaica Me Crazy. The name of this polish alone is what drew me to buy it – I do love a cheesy play on words – but I think the real reason is that I’m having holiday blues, can’t stand this British weather at the moment… the shade is super cute too lol!

Normally I do two layers, one thin first layer, then a second thicker layer to make the colour really pop. (I rarely use a base coat as I already use the Mavala products before any actual nail varnish and I find it just get too thick otherwise and takes forever to dry)

As I do my nails on a weekly basis – It’s way too time consuming to paint my nails more than that – I do have a cute selection of nail colours that I feel compliment the time of year.

I’m really loving pink/berry tones as they look great against my skin tone and are perfect for the time of year, but if I’m feeling a bit daring, the electric blue and hot red are definite options.

When I’m really in the mood I finish with a lovely top coat – Nails Inc’s Top Coat Kensington Caviar… but let me warn you… its stinks!

What nail colours do you love at the moment? Have you found any hues perfect for spring?

Not that I need to but, I would love to find some more colours and branch to different brands – as you can see I’m a hardcore fan of Nails Inc and Essie!

My Top 10 Tunes!

SONY DSC

With the release of such good tunes recently, it’s only fitting that I let you in on my top 10 favourite tunes right now. I just love, love, love a tune with good base, so these wireless noise cancelling Bose headphones are doing it for me right now. I’m a massive fan of Hip Hop and RnB, so whether I’m driving about, chilling at home or trying to focus at work, better believe I’m listening to these tunes!

SONY DSC

  1. Rihanna -Work
It would be a crime not to have this as my top 10! For about 2 weeks now this song has been on replay in my car, it’s a good hype tune and wakes me up preparing me for a long day at work. The music video was released too and I’m just getting pure Bajan vibes, you can be sure to catch me doing a little whine in my seat too! Don’t you just love the chemistry between Drake and Rihanna?
  2. Drake – Summer Sixteen
If you have not heard this tune, where have you been, under a rock? I’m on and off with Drake, but this song is great for getting pumped and if you wan a just get gassed.
  3. Kanye West  – Real Friends
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Kanye’s latest album but I’m feeling a few songs off of TLOP (The Life of Pablo)  I mean, who doesn’t love to love Kanye – or love to hate him! On a real though, this song had me in my thoughts and feelings – who are you real friends? Are you a real friend?

SONY DSC

4. Kanye West – Ultralight Beam
This song is just beautiful, powerful. Kirk Franklin, Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price & The Dream all on one track. This is a God dream!

5. Beyonce -Formation
I mean do I really have to explain why I love this song *Flicks locs*

6. The Game – Do It To You
Would you let The Game do it you? After listening to this song you might! I’m in love with The Game, I went to his concert a few weeks ago in Camden and it was ‘different’ to say the least. I hadn’t heard of this song until after though, and if you’ve seen his #FineNi**aFriday posts on Instagram you know what to expect!

7. KANO – GarageSkank
I’m new to Grime, but Kano is a legend, and from the song you can genuinely tell he had fun recording this track. It shows off his talent and cheeky side.

8. PARTYNEXTDOOR -Break From Toronto
This is one of those songs that you wish was longer. I have to listen to this about 3 times on repeat to get my fix lol

SONY DSC

9. D’Angelo – Betray My Heart
Forgot about D’Angelo? He didn’t win a Grammy this year for nothing

10. Chris Brown – Back To Sleep
The beat, the lyrics, damn Chris, come and set me back to sleep!

What tunes are you loving right now?  Leave me a comment, I always enjoy finding new music x

What’s In My Bag

FINAL

I’m so nosey, I just love reading and watching What’s in my Bag posts, so thought I’d do one myself!

After about a year’s worth of deliberation, trying to decide what bag I wanted to buy next, my siblings had, had enough of my indecisiveness and made the decision for me, they were kind enough to buy me a Michael Kors Camille Satchel for Christmas!

I’m so finicky with the types of bags that I buy. When I do finally buy one, I use it the time, so I guess it’s worth me taking my time right?

As you can see from the pic, I have A LOT in my bag, and actually have to clean it out daily, because I hoard so much.

But enough of that, let’s take a snoop around this bad boy! The first item in my bag is my Makeup Pouch. I carry this with me all the time. To be completely honest with you, I never really touch up my makeup throughout the day but, it’s always nice to carry -just in case, especially if I’m off out after work or staying at my boyfriends. If you want to see it’s contents check out my February Face post 😉

Next, I’ve got some nail stuff. I hate when my nails chip throughout the day and for some reason, it always happens. So instead of looking at my crusty nails at work and getting annoyed throughout the day, I decided to start carrying around Nails Inc’s Express Nail Varnish Remover as it’s easy and there’s no mess or gaffing with cotton pads and nail varnish removerand a nail varnish colour. I’ve actually become the go-to girl in my office if anyone needs a nail touch up lol. I’m currently loving; Tuberose by OFAT & It’s Genius by Essie.

NAIL STUFF

Along with my mini manicure set, I HAVE to have some hand cream. This is not even an option for me, I go through about 2-3 hand creams a month – I cant stand ashy hands on myself or others – a bit of cream never hurt anyone! This one is from Lush, the cream sinks into you hands and makes the supple – but I won’t go into that too much as I’ve got a Lush haul coming soon 😉

PERF

I have to carry around a scent or spritz, and at the moment I’m obsessed with Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid,  Oh ma gahd, this scent is divine, it’s definitely seductive, it’s fresh, feminine and floral, I love it. And let me just say, it’s sooooo much better than black orchid – I don’t know why everyone lied about loving that scent, it was awful.

I live in the UK, so its a necessity to have an umbrella. This one has lasted me years though, it’s by Windbreaker so it doesn’t turn inside out, when the wind decided to attack, plus it’s got a little torch on the bottom which is a cute addition.

Always have to carry paracetamol.

PARA

I’ve got a thing about dry skin, I can’t stand it. I apply Carmex about 2000 times a day. so this is always in my bag, along with a few other lip products.

BOOKS

One of my New Year’s resolutions were to get organised, so I bought a diary which I carry everywhere now. On the topic of books, I’ve been reading the Kray Twins biography and it is so good, heard good reviews about the films, but need to finish the book first – you know what they say, the books always better!

Bose headphones are my life! Literally the best headphones ever. I love listening to music, and I like my base, so these are ideal. On the topic of music, what are your favourite playlists on Spotify? I’ve got Make Out Jams, R&B Jams 100, Grime Shutdown and Hip Hop Top Tracks on replay all the time when I’m driving.

Everything else in my bag are just my necessities, house & car keys, purse and gum.

I hope you enjoyed having a snoop, what are you carrying around daily?

With London Fashion Week in full swing, I thought I’d do a post about what fashion pieces I’m loving, pieces i’ve been swooning over,  along with some pieces I would wear if I was attending this seasons Fashion Week.

I by no means call myself fashionable, but, if I could afford the pieces I love, I would be slaying hunny!

What pieces are you loving at the moment, and what are you lusting after this month?

10 questions I ALWAYS get asked about my hair

hair1

Hey lovelies, I thought I’d do a post about my hair.

I’ve been growing dreadlocks for about 8 to 9 years now, and whenever I’m out my locs always get me a lot of attention, whether it’s a random compliment or two, a request to touch or few rude comments, so I thought I’d answer some of the most bizarre questions I’ve received once and for all…

1) Do you wash your hair?
Errrrm… of course I wash my hair! Who doesn’t?!

I find this to be the  most offensive question of all.

For those of you interested enough, I actually wash my hair every 4-6 weeks. This keeps my hair healthy and strong, while maintaining natural oils that are needed to help bind my hair and stop it from breaking.

My usual routine is – wash, condition, re-twist, then air dry.

2) Can I touch your hair?
NO.

Lol, the way I react to this question really depends on the mood I’m in, but most of the time, the answer will be – Sure!

I don’t mind people asking, I’m all about breaking the negative stereotypes that are associated with having locs, so next time you see someone with locs, instead of staring and making assumptions – we all know assumption make an ASS out of U and ME,  just ask 🙂

3) Do you have to take them out to do them?
No. I cannot take out my locs. Can you take out the hair that’s attached to your scalp? Didn’t think so.

4) Are you a Rasta?
This question always cracks me up! The answer is no… can’t a girl just love locs?

5) How long have you been growing them?
I’ve been growing my locs for about 8 to 9 years. It wasn’t something that I really thought about compared to others who umm and ahh about deciding on whether to get locs, but I’ve always loved the way they look and love that I can embrace my natural hair.

6) Are they real?
Hell yeah, I spent near 9 years growing these bad boys!

7) Can you take them out?
So many people think committing to locs is a lifetime commitment, but you can actually comb them out, which is great, if you’ve got two weeks to spare.

8) Do they smell?
Didn’t you read my first answer?

9) Is it hard to get a job with locs?
Not at all, I feel people use this as an excuse, not to get locs, as you have to go through the ‘ugly’ stage. But in my opinion locs are getting a lot more popular with the likes of Meagan Good and co. rocking faux locs quite regularly.

10) How do you deal with natural hair? What can you do with dreadlocks, don’t you get bored?

This is something that always baffles me, my locs are not something I see as something I have to ‘deal’ with, its just my hair lol. Locs are so versatile, and there are so many styles that can be experimented with, and colours that can be tried… I’ve had a few mishaps with bleaching, but that’s another story in itself.

Most recently, I cut my locs into a short bob, after having long hair for a while, I thought I’d switch it up. The possibilities really are endless and prove that locs are just as cool if you want to express yourself as having non loc’d normal hair.

Have any other questions for me? Let’s talk! I hope you enjoyed and cleared up any questions you might have had about locs x

February Face

february face final

I’m a makeup junkie – there I said it! I love makeup, I love buying it, the fancy packaging, building a collection and just admiring it, but out of the gazillion pieces in my makeup collection, here’s what I’ve actually been using on my face this month.

Let’s start with Eyeko Black Magic Mascara – It is hands down the BEST mascara I’ve ever bought in my life, AND it was only £3 at a beauty sample sale – result! I used to use Benefit’s They’re Real! but it’s nothing on Eyeko. This mascara really does work, giving your lashes drama, length and curl, without clumping – I really can’t imagine using another mascara. My lashes tend to get weak too, but this contains Keratin and Shea butter which helps strengthen the lashes and conditions them… what more could you really want from a mascara.

Staying on the subject of eyes and lashes, my next love is Benefit’s They’re real Push Up Liner. I’m going to be honest, this eye liner is not the easiest to use because the design of the tip of the pen that’s designed with a ‘number’ to push lashes out of the way, but once I got the hang of it I found it’s quite easy to use and create a fleeky flick. One thing I love and hate about it though is that it stays put. Once you’ve drawn a line forget about trying to wipe mistakes away, but, on the plus side you don’t have to worry about it rubbing out throughout the day. You can also control how much actually comes out by twisting the bottom on the pen, which is handy.

Bare Minerals Powder in Golden Dark. I rediscovered this after my Mac pressed powder ran out, and I’m so glad I did. I had three lying about, so I’ve got enough to last me a lifetime. This is a non cakey powder that leaves your skin looking golden with a slight shimmer – I love it. It’s way lighter than Mac’s pressed powder and lasts throughout the whole day, I only touch up if I’m going out after work.

The next product that’s been on my face practically everyday since I bought it, is my Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation (yes ladies, now you don’t have to worry if a guy takes you swimming on a first date, lol) This foundation is beautiful, after getting a Mac Makeover, my artist recommended it and I find it looks so much better than the Studio Fix Fluid does on my skin – it looks more smooth and fluid. this foundation is a mid coverage foundation and build able, which is great if you have imperfections you want to cover. A little goes a long way too as this tube has lasted me about 5 months.mac3

Bobbi Brown and Mac products have a always been a staple in my makeup collection. I’ve had this Bobbi Brown palette for about 3 years and it’s something I always use when I’m going out or want to add a little shimmer to my look. I can’t actually remember what this palette is called but I use the colours for highlighting on my brow bone, and cheek bones. This is kind of my alternative to a contour kit, as I have high cheek bones this complements them, much more than a deep contour which I feel will exaggerate the shape of my face.

bobbi brownI think, in fact I know I have a problem with eye shadow palettes as I have so many, but only use this Mac Burgundy x9 palette, it gives me LIFE. The colours are just so beautiful – subtle enough for everyday, but are so pigmented and shimmery that you can wear them on a night out. my fave colours are; Honey Lust, Antiqued, Embark, Star Violet and Sketch.

One of my more recent purchases is a NYX Butter Gloss in Strawberry Parfait. I hardly ever wear lipstick or lip stain, but I thought I’d try something different and its definitely the colour for me –  a perfect mix between a pink and brown and it smells lush.

nyx

And lastly, it’s not really a makeup product, but I use this everyday, to control enlarged pores, even when i’m not wearing makeup. Maybelline’s Instant Pore Eraser is a miracle in a tube. I feel everyone in the beauty world has tried and tested this product but it’s something I’ll repurchase as it helps my makeup apply better and look a lot smoother over areas where I suffer with enlarged pores.

What beauty products have you been enjoying this month or in general? #FebruaryFace
